Day 2 #B90Days Challenge

Day 2 Reading: Genesis 17:1 – Genesis 28:19
Tuesday July 6, 2010

The first few days of the reading plan are going to be some of the hardest for me.  I have started many times to read the Bible cover-to-cover and never seem to get very far.  SO, I’ve read Genesis MULTIPLE times and it’s easy to just skim it because of that.  But this time, I’m avoiding doing that, but still find myself doing it from time to time.

Gen 17:19  And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

Everlasting Covenant” jumped out at me.

Everlasting is defined as: Lasting or enduring for ever; eternal; existing or continuing without end; immortal.

Covenant is defined as: To enter into a formal agreement; to stipulate; to bind ones self by contract.

So the covenant (agreement) between God and Abraham (or Isaac) is eternal and will never end.  It is still in force today and for eternity.

Genesis 18

The thing that stands out to me about this whole chapter is Abraham’s hospitality to the 3 strangers.  From what I understand this was common practice to offer this kind of hospitality to all who came to visit.  The Jewish people were expected to offer it to all who entered their tents.  This is definitely something that we as Christians should work on.  Christian hospitality just isn’t being taught in churches and homes like it once was.  Something I feel a real conviction about in my own life.

Gen 18:11  Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

I guess it had never struck me before that Sarah had gone through menopause.  I knew that she was considered old, but with the ages that some of the Old Testament people reached, I guess it never occurred to me that she was “that” old!

Genesis 20

Abraham didn’t learn from his past actions that lying about Sarah being his wife was NOT a good thing.  He did the same thing to Pharoah and it angered God against Pharoah then and Abimelech now.  Sarah must have been a knock-out!  Here she is “old and well stricken in age” as shown in Genesis 18:11, yet still men desire her.

Day 1 Reading – Genesis 1:1 – Genesis 16:16

Gen 2:17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

This brought upon both physical and spiritual death.  Sin and Death had entered the world.

Gen 3:13  And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Satan was sneaky and he knew just who to tempt.  Women are easily swayed by our emotions and I think this is why the Bible doesn’t allow for women to be teaching men.

Gen 4:26  And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

For some reason, this phrase “Call upon the name of the Lord” jumped out at me.

“Call” the world used for “qârâ’” which has been translated to mean, “bewray [self], that are bidden, call (for, forth, self, upon), cry (unto), (be) famous, guest, invite, mention, (give) name, preach, (make) proclaim (-ation), pronounce, publish, read, renowned, say.”

“Name” the word used for “shêm” which has been translated to mean  “an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character”

So from that I get that the people started to proclaim the name of the Lord with honor, to give him the authority.

Gen 6:2  That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Gen 6:4  There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

I’ve often wondered when reading through Genesis just who the “Sons of God” were.

Sons” the world used for “bên” which has been translated to mean. “a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc.,

God” the word used for “’ĕlôhı̂ym”, which has been traslated to mean “specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; “

So, I don’t know who these “Sons of God” are.  I know there has been talk of them being fallen angels, but I just don’t know.  I’ve always been curious as to who or what they were.

Tex-Mex Corn

This is a really simple way to "doctor" up plain canned or frozen corn.  It’s yummy and my fellas like it a lot.  This would be a great potluck dish, as it’s good and pretty inexpensive.  It could also be cooked in a crockpot.

Tex-Mex Corn

2 cans whole kernel corn, undrained
1/2 a large onion, diced
1/2 cup picante sauce (You can use more, if you like it spicy)
1 stick butter
salt & pepper to taste

Add all the ingredients into a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Turn the heat to low and cover.  Cook for 30 minutes, until onions are soft.
