I got a couple of questions that I thought I’d answer…
Q: Susan,What kind of fence is that? Is it electric? How does that work? Is it dangerous for the chidren? Do the pigs ever get out from underneath the fence?
Just curious:-)Gretchen
Q: Hi Susan! I have been enjoying reading your posts again after you blogging break
I am really interested your pig fencing though. Is it just electric fencing keeping them in? We would like pigs but didn’t want to construct a big wooden pen so this is something we would be super interested in! Is there a certain spacing that you would recommend for the strands of wire to be separated by? Very neat! Hope you don’t mind the questions
Blessings to you and your family,Rosina
A: Yes, the fence around the pigs is an electric fence. We just have an electric fence box that we plug in and run the wires from that (which makes the fence electrified). Both of the kids have touched it and it’s perfectly safe. It just emits a small electrical charge that kind of shocks you…doesn’t really hurt, it just surprises you. We have boards all the way around the pig area and the wires are strung about 1 foot apart. the bottom most wire is about 2 inches above the boards. How far apart you put he wires really depends on the size of the pigs. When these were smaller, the wires were closer together and weren’t as tall. So far, we haven’t had any escapees, except when the electric fence shorted out due to tall grass. It has worked great!
The area where they are is one of our garden beds. We use them to till up the ground for us to get ready for planting. This is the 3rd garden bed where we’ve used them like this. You wouldn’t believe it, but about 1-1/2 weeks ago this area was way over grown and full of grass and weeds. Now it’s all ready for planting. Marty’s in the process of getting the next area ready for them, we’ll move them from here as soon as it’s ready.
Here are a few pictures of the fences and area where they are currently residing..

Q: SUSAN DO YOU HAVE ANY PATTERNS FOR FANNY PACKS
A: No, I sure don’t, I would suggest googling free fanny pack patterns
My really silly boy Riley decided to take a blue ball point pen to his face…gotta love the results!

I really don’t know why he loves to write on himself with pens..Marty kids me that he’s going to grow up to be a tatoo artist!
…the chicks start arriving!!
Today I got a call from one of the places that we get our chicks from and our babies were ready!! So off I drove to the farm to pick them up. We are now the proud owners of 10 Barred Rocks and 10 Cuckoo Marans. They are just too cute!

Since I was going to be uploading these photos, I though I’d also post some other recent photos of what’s going on around here

We have YET ANOTHER one of these gas/oil wells being dug just around the corner from us. This is the 2nd one less than a mile from us.

this is just a cute picture of Riley after his bath with his hair sticking up everywhere.

this is a photo of our pigs…Bucket and Packer (don’t ask about the names…LOL!)

This is a close up of Packer.
We’re wanting to get some more pigs, both of ours are males and we really want a female. Riley’s in love with them (as he is with all animals) and we’ve been reading “Charlotte’s Web”. So, of course he wants a baby pet pig and name it Wilbur…LOL! When we can get a female and start having piglets, I’m sure that will happen. He is so funny! He has been bouncing off the wall ever since we brought the chicks home…he keeps sneaking off to watch them.
I finally got a call back from my doctor at about 8:30 last night. All my blood work turned out normal and my blood pressure was doing good. He said he couldn’t find anything in my blood work that was out of the normal, so the best he could do was to offer me Paxil. PAXIL!?! He was basically telling me that, he couldn’t find anything physically wrong with me, so it must all be in my head! I was so mad I could have just spit nails! I very politely told him no thank you (I REALLY had to restrain myself..LOL!). I have never really like this doctor and am going to change doctors. I really like the family practitioner that we take the kids too. The only reason I was going to this doctor was because he was my OBGYN and I haven’t seen the other doctor yet. The doctor I take my kids to is super nice and he actually listens to me when I tell him what’s going on. So, next month when I can afford to go again, I’m switching over to him. So, thankfully, nothing is wrong that can be found in my blood work. My thyroid is okay, my blood sugar is okay, and I’m not aneimic. At least we ruled out some things!
Well, I need to get off and get some stuff one around here! Have a great day everyone!
I don’t have much time today on the computer. I have a doctor’s appointment at 10, so I’m going to have to leave in about 45 minutes. I’m going to get my blood pressure checked to see if I can get off the blood pressure meds. I’m also going to talk to him about some things that have been going on and see if I can get some tests run. I don’t think it’s anything major, just really run down, tired and my brain feeling foggy. So, keep me in your prayers this morning.
After I get done with that, I need to run by the post office and mail some cards (2 of them REALLY late birthday cards…yikes!!). I’ve got to get the kids fed and then run a couple more errands. No homeschool today, so Colt is doing a happy dance (actually, he’s still asleep, I thought I’d let him sleep in a bit).
Well I need to get off the computer and start getting ready to leave. I hope you all have a great day! It looks like it’s going to be another pretty, sunny day here!
How are all of ya’ll this bright and sunny day? I’m doing very well here! The sun is out and it’s looking like it’s going to be a beautiful day.
Saturday, it rained all day. It was cold, wet and dreary. So, we spent the day running errands and doing a little shopping. Marty bought me a cute denim skirt at the Lane Bryant outlet…it was on sale for 50% off, I got it for $12.25. I love when I just happen on those kind of bargins. I’ve been looking for another denim skirt for a while and hadn’t been able to find one I liked. Then we stopped at a close out book store where I found a couple of books.
One was “Just Like Mommy – Easy Matching Clothes for Moms and Kids” by Cheryl Reinhard Jukich. I got it for $4.99. I thought it might have some fun thing that I can make and put in the Etsy shop my Mom, sister-in-law, and I plan to open this summer.
I also got a scrapbooking book by Leeza Gibbons called “Scrapbooking Traditions”. I got it for $4.99 as well. It has some nice layouts and information, especially for the beginning scrapbooker.
Sunday after Church, I was feeling yucky, so I laid down and took a nap. Marty and the boys went down to the stock tank to do a little bit of fishing and to keep the kids from waking me (I have a SWEET husband!). They seemed to have a lot of fun and Riley came back soaking wet….he fell into the stock tank, a great way to try out his brand new life jacket! They didn’t catch anything, but they had fun.
Today, I’m need to do a bit of laundry and if I have time, I’d like to do a bit of scrapbooking and I need to work on a crochet shaw I’m working on. Well, I’d better get out of here, if I’m going to get anything done this morning! Have a wonderful day everyone!!
Sorry I just haven’t been around much the last couple of weeks. It has been busy, hectic here. Spring starts coming in and we’re off to rush and try to get things ready for the garden. This weekend we bought our first seeds for the year…we’re a little behind already. We bought some broccoli and lettuce seeds. We’re going to get them started in the cold frame that Marty built last year. Marty has been really busy at work and has been having to work most Saturdays, so that’s put us behind (not that I’m complaining…the extra money from over-time is nice too!).
Marty’s hoping to purchase some hens that are already laying this next weekend. It will be nice not to have to purchase eggs any more. We’ll still get some chicks when the feed store gets them in (around mid-March they told me). Our pigs are doing well too. They are growing like crazy. We’re also looking into buying some bottle-fed cows in the next few weeks. Right now the local auction barns have only been getting about $10-$20 per head on them….very cheap! We’re getting the gardening thing down pretty good, so we’re really wanting to start adding more animals into the mix. I’m dying to purchase a couple of milk goats. Milk at the store has gotten so expensive and I would rather the kids drink the raw milk. Then of course, I really would like to learn to make cheese. There’s also butter, yogurt & kefir to make. A couple of dairy goats would save us a lot of money. But, until we can afford them, we’ll have to wait.
I have a couple of prayer requests. Please keep my grandmother Adeen McNiel in your prayers as well as a family that recently contacted me. They just discovered that the baby the wife is carrying has Potter’s Syndrome, very similar to what we went through with Gabriel. Please keep them in your prayers.
Well, I need to get off here and do some things around here. I need to finish cleaning the stove. Hugs everyone!!
I’ve updated both of my other blogs:
Here’s a few other things I found around the web:
Saturday, we drove down to my Mom’s to spend the night. The kids had a good time as usual. Colt played a computer game that they bought for him…he really enjoyed it. Marty, Dad and Riley went fishing. This was the first time Riley had ever been fishing and Marty said he had a ball.

The kids were also excited to get their Christmas presents from Uncle Bubba & Aunt Kathy. Marty and I were also thankful for our gifts. I got the neatest crochet book and can’t wait to try out some of the designs.
This morning, I got up and ran some errands and hit the grocery store. The rest of this week is going to be pretty dull…homeschool, house work, and the like. But, that is perfectly okay with me. I like the peace and quiet over excitement.
Please keep my grandmother in your prayers. I don’t really think I should go into it much, but just pray that the Lord helps her to adjust to life without my Grandfather. She also needs some prayers in regards to her health. She is extremely lonely, especially at night.
Mom & Dad sent home some venison, so for dinner tonight, we’ll be eating some of it. I’m not sure if we’re going to have steaks, ground venison or venison sausage. I think I’ll do the sausage with some sauerkraut…Marty loves that meal, but Colt hates the sauerkraut so I’ll cook it separately.
I know there has been a lot of scrapbooking stuff up here lately and I wanted to ask your opinion on something. Would ya’ll like me to continue putting the scrapbooking stuff on this blog, or move it over to another blog?
Well, I need to get off here. I’m going to try to read some blogs before I have to pick up Marty from work (he gets the internet in the evening). Take care everyone!!
